Providing safe walkways for pedestrians

When road extending or widening works are taking place, pedestrian walkways will often need to be diverted away from the works, for both practical and safety reasons. When the surrounding surfaces are unsuitable for pedestrian access, bog mats can be used to create temporary safe walkways over ground that would otherwise be difficult to traverse.

Protecting surrounding land

Particularly in rural areas, works to extend and widen roads will involve moving machinery and vehicles around the surrounding land, both to gain access and in order to work on the new road surface. As well as providing temporary access and safe working areas for these vehicles and machinery, bog mats provide ground protection for the land itself.

By providing a barrier between the underlying ground and the machinery and vehicles doing the work, bog mats protect the ground together with any underground services from damage. They will help guard against ground churn and disintegration as well as preventing any cross contamination that might occur.

This is important both from the point of view of safeguarding the environment and surrounding landscape, as well as in terms of reducing the risk of compensation claims or environmental reinstatement costs.
